I see a lot of meadowlarks at the Seashore, but they are as skittish as bluebirds. I can never get a lens on one. I finally succeeded.
I haven’t been out there in a while. With the recent rains and short days wildlife sightings should be very good now.
I’m still upgrading my website by making each image larger. It’s a lot of work, but I think it will be a nice improvement to the site. One extra benefit is that I’m finding some images that I like that I didn’t know I had. This photo was taken in early August. As I often do, I came back to this photo after I published the blog and was struck by how wide this bull can open its mouth. For some reason, I pictured a set of canine teeth in there, developed for defensive purposes. I wonder what wolves would say — if they had any say in it? For that matter, I wonder what elk hunters would say?
I see barn swallows flitting all over at Point Reyes. When I saw this male on barbed wire I was happy to photograph him. There was a male on a post next to him. I don’t normally like to photograph birds on wire, but I liked the way the rust on the wire complemented his colors.
I can’t believe my luck. Yesterday I found a second badger den in the last 7 days at Point Reyes National Seashore. There are two cubs and this one is the more aggressive. Here it’s enjoying a roll on the entrance mound.
Long-tailed weasels are about as hard to find and photograph as badgers. This is the second one I’ve seen and been able to photograph at Point Reyes. I found it a few days after photographing the mother badger and her cubs. Every week should be so good.
A friend and I were driving toward the Point Reyes Lighthouse last week when we saw this sow badger and her two cubs. They were very close to the edge of the road. For some reason she decided to build her den there. I hope she moves. If they stay there the chances are that one or more of them will be killed by a vehicle.
I like and enjoy seeing all wild birds. Okay, I’ll admit that I like some more than others. Take today’s photo for example. It’s not a bald eagle. It’s not a peregrine falcon. It’s not a great gray owl. It’s a red-winged blackbird. Still, I was happy to have the opportunity it gave me to photograph it and to try to create an attractive image.
