Black Bear Spring Cub, Yellowstone National Park

I can’t wait to get to Yellowstone this spring.  This little spring cub (AKA “cub of the year” or “COY”) is one reason why.

    1. Thanks Michele. When to go depends on where you want to drive and what you want to see. The only road open now is from Gardiner to Cooke City. On April 16 they’ll open the road from West Yellowstone (subject to weather conditions). Further road openings are staggered from then through May 21 (Dunraven Pass). I think May and early June is the best period. The sweet spot for seeing baby animals is probably the last week in May and the first week in June.

  1. That’s a great photo Jim! Was this the little cub that was with the mother that we staked out near Tower? In any case, it’s a great capture and does make one long to get back to Yellowstone.

    1. Hi Alan. Thanks. It’s not the same cub. I photographed it in May 2009 and it had a sibling. It was in the Tower area though, so it could be the same mother.
