Here is a lion that I saw every day while shooting in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy in Kenya. He co-leads a pride with another male of about the same age. I don’t recall if they are brothers or just partners to give themselves a better chance of holding onto the pride.

A Lioness Carries Her Cub to a New Den, Kenya

This is a photo of a lioness carrying a cub in her mouth to a new den.

A few months ago I posted a photo of this lioness carrying her cub. This is a different photo and I cropped it to better show their faces, especially the little cub’s tongue hanging out of its mouth. The photo was taken in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy, Kenya.

This is a portrait photo of a male lion in Kenya.

This is one of two male lions that were the leaders of a pride that I saw every one of the four days I was at Porini Lion Camp. They were easy to find, at least when you have Nelson Keiwua and John Tompoi as your guide and spotter. Canon R5 and EF-17-40L lens. Just kidding. RF-100-500L lens at 500mm.

This is a photo of a young adult male lion.

Serenity.

This handsome male lion is in his prime. I have read that as he ages his nose will become black, he will develop jowls and he will have noticeable scars on his face. I’m guessing he’s about 5 or 6 years old.

“Let’s Be Careful Out There.”

For those of you old enough to remember the TV show “Hill Street Blues,” Sgt. Esterhaus used to end his briefings with the caution “let’s be careful out there.” The streets can be dangerous. So can the plains of the Serengeti as this male African lion can attest. In addition to that nasty wound under his eye and split upper lip, he’s missing his upper left fang and his lower one is broken. Nevertheless, he is still the leader of a pride.

I saw a fair number of lions in Serengeti National Park last September. Cheetahs were harder to find, but leopards were by far the most difficult to find of the three.

Some of My Favorite Images from 2018

Back in late 2007 a photographer by the name of Jim Goldstein invited other photographers to do blogs showing their 10 best photographs of that year and to send him a link to their blogs which he would then add to a list of the blogs of all who were participating. It was a great service to all who appreciated good photography. It gave me a handy list of photographers (mostly nature photographers) so I could easily look at what they were doing and how my work compared to theirs. I participated a couple of times, but somehow forgot about it. I saw a notice about it recently and decided to participate again.

2018 for me was highlighted by a trip to Tanzania hosted by the African Wildlife Foundation (Craig Sholley) and Nature’s Best Photography (Jeff Vanuga). They hired Thomson Safaris to deliver all the necessary services such as camps, food, drivers etc. All three were superb. I also made my regular trips to Point Reyes National Seashore, which is a short drive from my home.

Jim Goldstein used to ask that you list your 10 “best” photos. The limit of 10 was not strictly followed by most and Jim seems to have de-emphasized it nowadays. Picking what you think are your “best” photos is not easy. So, below is a list of “some” of my “favorite” photos of 2018 in no particular order.
