These two bulls were sparring with their hooves because their antlers obviously aren’t ready for fighting. This photo was taken yesterday near Pierce Point Ranch just as the sun was setting. Chrysler was there shooting commercials for several of its cars and trucks. It occupied the Pierce Point Ranch parking lot, the McClure’s Beach parking lot, and the east side of the road leading to the ranch. It looked like a movie set. They may be out there today as well.
This photo was underexposed about one and a half stops because the mode dial on my Canon 7D got moved inadvertently from AV to manual. This happens too easily and frequently. Canon now offers to fix this problem for a fee. I don’t know why Canon hasn’t always made the prosumer cameras so that the mode dial can’t be changed inadvertently. You shouldn’t have to send in your camera to prevent this from happening.

This is so interesting, Jim! I guess they don’t just worry about dominance during the rut. I’d imagine that this type of fighting it potentially more dangerous to the combatants, since those hooves could do a lot of damage if they make contact.
And how interesting about the car commercials — I love trying to pick out the Bay Area scenes from commercials on TV. I think it’s Toyota that has one I’ve seen recently that includes the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and Ridgecrest Road on Mount Tam.
I think you’re right Pat. I think it is potentially more dangerous. As for car ads, I think Ridgecrest is probably the most used road in car commercials. I’m not sure what segment of Pierce Point Road will be used, but they had us stopped for a short while all the way back at Kehoe Ranch. I’m also wondering if they’ll try to get some elk in the ad as part of the background. They were close to the road when I was there. The ranch compound shot from around where the right hand turn leads you down to the ranch area would be another good thing to have in the ad.
