This is the female of the pair of western bluebirds nesting in one of our bird boxes. She has a habit of flying to our windows and those of our neighbor. Sometimes she bumps into the window with her breast and other times stops just short of hitting the window. I understand it’s a territorial thing, in that she sees her reflection and thinks it’s a rival. She does this many, many times each day. I’m wondering if she will ever realize it’s not another bird.
I monitored this nest over a period of two weeks or so. This is one of the last photos I took.
This acorn woodpecker and its mate nested in this tree cavity next to my friend Jeff’s garage in Inverness this past spring. Jeff kept an eye on the nest, but never saw any young. That’s the way it goes sometimes.
They are colorful birds. Their habit of storing acorn nuts in the holes they create in trees, fences and anything else made of wood can make them unpopular when they decide to store their nuts in the wood siding of a house.
