Yesterday was a good day for bear sightings. I saw seven black bears and one grizzly. One of them I know I saw and photographed before because he has a something wrong with his left front leg. It seems the elbow is locked. Sometimes he puts it and his whole foreleg on the ground when he walks and other times he puts just his paw on the ground. Either way he is unbalanced with that locked elbow. When he goes downhill he just raises his left foreleg and sort of “hops” downhill.
This is the second animal I’ve seen in the last week with a significant problem. The other was a cow bison with calf. The cow never put her left hind leg on the ground. If a grizzly goes after her calf she won’t be able to move well enough to try to fend the grizzly off.
Life can be tough. I hope they both make it.

Life can be tough! I suppose you also had some feelings also for the Cow Elk that didn’t make it with the wolf. It’s sure it’s great to witness the various hardships that can befall any animals in the wild.

It does affect you when you observe an animal for a while and it is injured. I then think about the predator which has to eat.

Jim… Your photos are AMAZING / STUNNING, and such an inspiration.. I have enjoyed reading through your blog and when I find more time, I want to continue going through it. I have a question… When is the best time to see Bears in Yellowstone? I have been there many times (June and August months), but have yet to see a bear. And how beautiful the Gray Wolf is. I have yet to see a wolf. I have seen Coyote, but the wolf is gorgeous… Nice work! You can definitely tell through your photos that you have a passion for wildlife…

Thank you Michele. I can sympathize with you on the difficulties of finding bears. In my experience, the best time is mid May. If you have the time I’d recommend the second and third weeks of May.
