Bobcat at Sunset, Point Reyes National Seashore

A bobcat moves across a pasture at sunset in Point Reyes National Seashore.

This bobcat appeared at sunset on one of the ranches in Point Reyes National Seashore. No matter how many hours I’m in the Seashore on any given day, I become very focused during the last hour or so of daylight.

I’ve been very fortunate in getting good photo ops in the golden hour. Bobcats, and many other species, become very active at the beginning and end of the day. There’s a word for this behaviour, “crepuscular” which is derived from the Latin word “crepusculum,” which means twilight (dawn and dusk), and certainly fits when bobcats are most active.

A lot of wildlife photographers leave before sunset. I always say a silent “thank you” to them when they leave as the crepuscular critters start to become more active and more visible. Less people, more contented bobcat.

If I have a good subject, I keep shooting until it’s too dark to shoot any more.
