This resident coyote was looking for something to eat when it spotted yet another Point Reyes tourist. The Seashore is a good place to spot coyotes, but they exist throughout Marin County, provided there is good habitat for them.
I went out to Point Reyes for a while today. I saw two bobcats and a coyote, not to mention the more common things like elk, deer, various hawks, a burrowing owl, and other birds. When I first saw this bobcat it was lying down in the grass. I wasn’t sure if it was a bobcat or a tabby cat. One of our two tabby cats has a face that looks just like a bobcat’s face and there are plenty of farm cats in the Seashore. Anyway, as you can see from the photo, it was definitely a bobcat. Point Reyes is a good place to spot bobcats, but they exist in suitable habitat throughout Marin County.
Kestrels are hard to photograph because they are so skittish. I got a break with this one. It was a little slower to move with dinner on the table.
Along with eagles and great horned owls, red-tailed hawks are one of my favorite raptors to photograph. Point Reyes is a good place to find them.
This 7-point bull is exhibiting the Flehmen Response with its head and upper lip raised. Certain species of mammals do this to increase their ability to detect and evaluate scent. It’s a common sight during the mating season, but it can occur any time of the year. This photo was taken in mid December, well past the end of the rut.
Crows aren’t the most beautiful or colorful birds. The same holds true for ravens. However,they are both blessed with one attribute that would seem to be more important in the wild — intelligence. Studies have shown crows and ravens to be among the most intelligent of all birds. What I like about this photo is the effect from the eye’s nictitating membrane.
This mourning dove let me get quite close. The coloring of these birds, with their black eyes, teal orbital rings and tans and grays of their bodies, is subtle, but beautiful.
