American Kestrel, Point Reyes National Seashore
Kestrels are hard to photograph because they are so skittish. I got a break with this one. It was a little slower to move with dinner on the table.
Red-tailed Hawk, Point Reyes National Seashore
Along with eagles and great horned owls, red-tailed hawks are one of my favorite raptors to photograph. Point Reyes is a good place to find them.
Black Bear Spring Cub, Yellowstone National Park
I can’t wait to get to Yellowstone this spring. This little spring cub (AKA “cub of the year” or “COY”) is one reason why.
Lesser Goldfinch, Marin County, California
Here is another photo from our garden. I decided to do a poster series of birds like I did last summer of Yellowstone wildlife. The Yellowstone posters are available at The Paradise Gallery in Gardiner, Montana. The bird posters are now available at Wild Birds Unlimited, Novato, California. I had never been in a Wild Birds Unlimited store before the Novato store opened this past summer. It is very nice and the people are very knowledgeable. If you’re interested in attracting and feeding wild birds and there is a Wild Birds Unlimited store near you, then you probably already know how good they are. But, if you have one nearby and haven’t checked it out, you should.
White-crowned Sparrow, Marin County, California
I did some more photographing in our garden recently. In exchange for a little seed, this white-crowned sparrow agreed to pose. I haven’t seen the jackrabbit who used to run around the garden when I was shooting there a couple of months ago. I hope he is OK.

Tule Elk, Point Reyes National Seashore
This 7-point bull is exhibiting the Flehmen Response with its head and upper lip raised. Certain species of mammals do this to increase their ability to detect and evaluate scent. It’s a common sight during the mating season, but it can occur any time of the year. This photo was taken in mid December, well past the end of the rut.
