A Bull Elk Bugles, Yellowstone National Park

Photo of a bull elk bugling.
Here I Am.

This bull and his small harem were on the far side of the Madison River near the Madison campground every night in mid September.  Around sunrise each day they would cross the river and then the road and head up the ridge across from the river.  They attracted quite a crowd each morning.

  1. Nice shot, Jim! They make such interesting faces when they bugle, and the first time you hear it, it just doesn’t sound like something that should be coming out of a big bull elk!

    1. You’re right Pat, but it’s one of nature’s great sounds. I’d rank it up there with the calls of wolves, loons and Canada geese on the wing.

  2. Nice shot Jim. I have been enjoying all of your Yellowstone pictures. It’s great that you were able to make a trip this year. I am living vicariously through you…
