Black Bear Cub of the Year (“COY”), Yellowstone National Park

Photo of a cub of the year ("COY"), also known as a spring cub, walks through tall grass.
“Hey Mom, Wait Up!”

This is a good time to be in Yellowstone to see bear cubs.  While I enjoy photographing all cubs, the spring cubs, also known as cubs of the year, or “COYs,” are the cutest.  Spring cubs are tiny.  How tiny?  I think of them as footballs with legs.

  1. Adorable Jim! We are heading therre on Monday in hopes of seeing cubs… Any areas you recommend? We will only be there for 4-5 days..

  2. Such a great picture Jim. Looks like you didn’t make it to the park this spring either. I heard that this May wasn’t as action packed as last May was.

  3. Hi Jim,
A Great photo of the “COY”. Glad to see you are shooting some bears, spring has been slow to come to YNP, not much was going early like last year. Get lots of good shots, and stay safe.
